An Elopement Story: 80 Years of Wedding Bliss
“We ran away and got married. It was an elopement. We told the family about it afterwards. We weren’t taking any chances..."
The wedding anniversary of a charming Southern California couple was recently in the news, and with good reason – Maury Goosenberg, 102, and his bride Helen Goosenberg, 100, eloped to Philadelphia in 1935 after Helen popped the question, and have been living in wedding bliss for the last 80 years. The couple’s interview, conducted by Digital Media Producer Monica Garske and featured on San Diego news station NBC 7, revealed that Maury’s family “wasn’t too happy with me and mine wasn’t too happy with him,” according to Helen, but eight decades later, the fact that the couple eloped instead of going the traditional wedding route clearly didn’t diminish the strength of their marriage.
